Sierra Club in California
Clean Water, Healthy Forest

Clean water begins at the source. So forests, which provide 80% of California's urban water supplies, play an important role in keeping our communities and wildlife healthy throughout the state. The forests of the Sierra Nevada and the North Coast, long renowned for their stunning beauty and diverse ecology, are critical in maintaining safe levels of water quality and quantity, and in promoting strong rural and agricultural economies statewide.

However, destructive logging practices are taking an enormous toll on our state-regulated forests. Fifty years of industrial logging has already caused severe consequences for North Coast rivers and streams, and the plans of one industrial timber company to clearcut over 1 million acres of Sierra Nevada forests foreshadow further damage -- unless we take action now to protect our forests and water quality for our families, for our future.

Three steps you can take for clean water and healthy forests:

  • Write to state leaders and tell them they must act now to protect California's water and forests. Click here for more information, including addresses and sample letters.

  • Sign up to receive action alerts from the Clean Water, Healthy Forests Campaign to keep updated on what's going on and how you can help. Send a quick email to sign up for email or phone alerts.

  • Spread the word about clean water and healthy forests by passing on this page, coming to a meeting in your area, or volunteering with the campaign. Contact Paul Mason in the Sacramento Field Office for more information about getting involved, or call him at (916) 557-1100, ext. 120.
