Beautiful waterfall dropping into a emerald blue pool at the bottom of a sandstone bluff.

Waterfalls of the Bankhead National Forest | February 20th and February 27th (There will be two groups on each date.)

Join the Cahaba Group of the Sierra Club on a waterfall expedition to some of the least visited -- but no less spectacular -- waterfalls in the Bankhead National Forest.

Space is limited, so please contact Brandon at 205-623-8511 in order to reserve a spot on either date.

We will be visiting Sougahoagdee Falls, Holmes Chapel Falls, Shangri-La Falls (pictured above) and Collier Falls. All of these falls are in the Bankhead National Forest and east of the Sipsey Wilderness. Coal Mine Branch Falls will be another possible option if the group makes good time.

Although there will be a lot of driving, there will be some very strenuous hiking involved with visiting most of these falls. There are no trails to these falls and we will be bushwhacking  -- so you must be prepared to traverse steep hills, scramble over slick rocks, battle briars, wet sand, as well as wet foot (and calf) water crossings.

There will be a few areas on Collier Creek in which walking IN the creek will be the easiest path. So make sure you wear wool socks and synthetic pants. Do not wear cotton or jeans!

We will be hiking about 10 miles on this date. You need to have good conditioning and must honestly assess your hiking experiences prior to signing up for this event.

There will be a few sketchy places -- including our climb down into Collier Canyon at Shangri-La Falls.

This will be an all day event.

Bring water and snack lunch. You will also want to bring a change of clothes for once the  expedition has completed. Be sure to bring your camera.

Optional dinner at Chef Troy's Talk of the Town in Houston, Alabama on the way home.
