Sierra Club Praises Selection of Sunstein to Head
White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs
Washington, D.C.--President Obama today formally nominated Cass Sunstein, Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, to the post of Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs within the White House Office of Management and Budget. Sunstein previously spent 27 years at the University of Chicago Law School, where he continues to teach as the Harry Kalven Visting Professor. The Sierra Club offered the following comments.
Statement of Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director
"We applaud the nomination of Cass Sunstein to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. Professor Sunstein is universally regarded as a brilliant legal thinker who, for many years, has studied and written at length about the federal regulatory process. Professor Sunstein's strong pro-environment values also represent a marked change from his predecessors under the Bush Administration. Under the previous administration, OIRA's explicit role was to undermine the existing environmental protections enjoyed by the American people and to block new policies, including those to address global warming, from being implemented.
"This is just the latest nomination underscoring President Obama's committment to filling our government with the best and the brightest minds available. In his short tenure, President Obama has already done much to return honor to public service and basic competence to the operation of our government."
