Sierra Club Endorses Eric Griego for U.S. Congress in New Mexico
Albuquerque, NM – The Sierra Club today announced the endorsement of Eric Griego for election to the U.S. Congress to represent New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District, based on his consistently strong record on environmental and clean energy issues.
"Senator Griego understands that a clean energy economy will ensure a healthy environment for our kids and our grandkids and will create good paying jobs here and now," said Richard Barish, Acting Political Chair of the Central New Mexico Group of the Sierra Club.
As a city council member, Griego was a leader in the effort to ensure that Albuquerque followed a smart strategy to protect vital natural resources, the city's beauty and the region's open spaces. In the state senate, Griego sponsored and helped pass SB318, among other bills, to support clean energy job creation and to assist businesses with training for their employees in emerging "green-collar" job skills.
"Throughout his career, Senator Griego has been the one doing the heavy lifting to protect our environment," said Sierra Club President Robin Mann. "The Sierra Club will proudly mobilize our members and supporters toward Eric Griego's candidacy for U.S. Congress."
Griego has led efforts to defeat various anti-environmental measures, including efforts to weaken New Mexico's renewable portfolio standard. He has a 100% Conservation Voters New Mexico voting record.
"I'm inspired by Senator Griego's bold leadership and unyielding defense of working families from corporate polluters," said Shrayas Jatkar with the Sierra Club in New Mexico. "He has experience creating policies that provide New Mexicans with a win-win deal for jobs and a healthy environment. He's exactly the kind of leader we need in Washington in order to break the D.C. gridlock and unleash the full power of a clean energy economy."
Griego’s endorsement announcement today is the second given so far by the Sierra Club in the 2012 federal election cycle. The Sierra Club will mobilize its more than 1.4 million members and supporters nationwide – including approximately 8,000 in New Mexico – to support endorsed candidates who have demonstrated pro-environmental records and platforms.
