The charge of the Sierra Club's Agriculture Committee is to inform,
disseminate and collaborate with members of the Sierra Club and the
public regarding a system of agriculture that strives for a
sustainable balance that is both equitable for the human population
and agriculture supply.
- Create and revise Sierra Club Policy related to agriculture and
communicate to chapters, state committees, and other national committees.
- Build solid coalition ties with progressive agriculture
organizations and individuals at the national level and in targeted
state/local areas around commonly shared agendas.
- Develop and disseminate compelling public messages which promote
the shared agenda of the Sierra Club and agriculture.
- Oppose public policy initiatives which encourage farming
practices that are not responsible and can not be sustainable while
promoting diversified farming which has much less impact on the
environment.
- Promote sustainable practices that include:
- reducing/eliminating urban sprawl or defining the urban edge,
-
protecting and restoring water, air, wetlands, wildlife habit,
aquatic habitat, riparian zones
-
reducing non-point pollution,
- reducing/eliminating dependence on agri-chemicals
- allow local communities to regain control through grassroots efforts
to make decisions and policies that affect their local economies,
empower consumers with information about responsible food production
and processing as opposed to the industrial model of producing and
processing
