June Meeting of the Cahaba Group | The Energy Efficient Home

Join us for a meeting of the Cahaba Group of the Sierra Club at 6:30p on Thursday, June 8th. We will be meeting at the Hoover Public Library for this event.

This month we will have a presentation by Stephen Guesman of GreenWorks called 'The Energy Efficient Home: Why You Want It and How to Get It'

The business meeting will begin at 6:00p and will be followed at 6:30p by Guesman's presentation.

Do you know the answer to the question:"What element of your life has the biggest carbon footprint?"

(Hint: it is not your car.)

This informative presentation will help you learn how lower your carbon footprint as well as your monthly utility costs.

Stephen Guesman is a residential remodeling contractor and green building educator from Birmingham Alabama.  He presents Green Building workshops for home builders and remodelers, as well as Green Living and Home Energy Clinics for homeowners. He has worked on passive solar, underground and straw bale homes as well as conventional remodeling and homebuilding. His current practice includes Home Energy Assessments and Makeovers, and Green Home Design Reviews. Guesman and his wife live on a rural Blount county farm (north Alabama) in a passive solar home with solar power (off-the-grid) and solar thermal hot water.

May Meeting of the Cahaba Group | Hike the High Ore Line

Join us for a meeting of the Cahaba Group of the Sierra Club at 6:30p on Thursday, May 11, 2017. Instead of the usual format - we will be conducting a hike/stroll of a little more than two miles on one of the newest sections of the Red Rock Trail System: the High Ore Line.

This trail was built on an elevated rail line and  runs for nearly two miles from Wenonah Road (the north side of Red Mountain Park) to Doctor MLK Boulevard in Midfield.

So come on out an work up a sweat with us and hike/walk a couple of miles.

We will meet at the southernmost trailhead on Wenonah Road (760 Wenonah Road) at 6:30 pm and hit the trail by 6:40p to walk about a mile before turning around.

This will be an out and back hike and a chance to familiarize yourself with a part of Birmingham you have probably never hiked before.

April Meeting of the Cahaba Group | Darryl Patton Plant Walk

Join us for the April Meeting of the Cahaba Group of the Sierra Club in which renowned herbalist and forager Darryl Patton will lead a plant walk/discussion at the Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve.

Patton teaches wilderness survival skills around the country and is an instructor with Randall's Adventure Training in Ft. Payne, has been a consultant for the Discovery Channel's 'Man vs. Wild' with Bear Grylls, and also is the author of 'Mountain Medicine, The Herbal Remedies of Tommie Bass.'

Patton's walk will last about forty-five minutes and he will focus on presenting the traditional edible and medicinal uses of many of the indigenous plants that can be found in the Appalachian region of the southeastern states.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

The walk will not be strenuous and is suitable for all ages. Time permitted, we will meet on the back porch at Ruffner to continue the discussion.
