Wild and Scenic Film Festival in Huntsville, Saturday, January 11

The Alabama Rivers Alliance, Energy Alabama, and Flint River Conservation Association (FRCA) are proud to bring the Wild & Scenic Film Festival to Huntsville for the sixth year! The festival will be January 11, 2020 at Straight to Ale!

Join us for an evening of celebrating the great outdoors through film that will leave you feeling inspired and engaged. The program will feature short films and documentaries highlighting adventures to be had as well as important issues to be addressed. Experts from across the state will be on hand to help answer any questions and provide guidance on how you can get involved locally and throughout Alabama. Plus, we’ll have door prizes! Each ticket includes a membership to Alabama Rivers Alliance.

The Sierra Club of North Alabama is seeking new Excom (Executive Committee) members.

Are you interested in becoming more involved in the Sierra Club's North Alabama Group? Contact Steve Jackson, Group Chair, covecrawler@gmail.com, about becoming an ExCom member. A few are needed to help with social media, conservation, outings leaders, etc. The ExCom usually meets 4 - 6 times during the year.

Outings

Hike Ratings

Easy - Less than 5 miles, no serious elevation changes, no trail obstacles.

Moderate - 5 to 10 miles, some elevation changes or rough trail (rock hopping), or trail obstacles such as creek crossings.

Strenuous - Over 10 miles, substantial elevation change, rocky, obstructed or nonexistent trail.

Exploratory - any event where the leader has not experienced the event; may fit any class above.

Note. Participants of Sierra Club outings are required to sign a waiver.

Saturday, December 14 - Stone Cuts Hike. Moderate.

We will enjoy a hike to one of the more interesting features on Monte Sano on Saturday, December 14. This will be a moderate hike of about 5 miles - there are some short, steep climbs over uneven and rocky trails. Dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes. Bring a camera, water, snacks and some cash for the State Park Entrance Fee ($5). We will meet at 10:00am at the Hikers Parking Lot in the Monte Sano State Park - 5105 Nolen Ave SE, Huntsville, AL 35801. Leashed dogs are welcome. Rain cancels this hike. Saturday, December 14 - Monte Sano Holiday Chile Cookout and Campfire Social.

Join us on Monte Sano for some fellowship and fun around the fire for a chili cookout and campfire social. We will supply meat and vegetarian chili. Please bring a side dish or desert if you can. BYOB. We recommend you bring a camp chair. Social Starts at 1:00 We will have reserved three camping sites so you are welcome to tent camp overnight. RSVP Appreciated!

The social will be at Monte Sano State Park in the primitive campground area, Sites #15, #17, #19. Park in the outside parking lot or we will have a code for you to drive to the campsite. Volunteers are welcome to help shuttle participants. There will be a day hike on Monte Sano prior to the event, so feel free to join the hike and then come directly to the campground. For question contact Steve at covecrawler@gmail.com

Saturday, December 21 - Wade Mountain Winter Hike. Strenuous.

Vickie is leading a hike on one of her favorite Land Trust Properties. This will be a strenuous hike of about 14 miles with about 1500 ft. of elevation gain. There will be some short, steep climbs over uneven and rocky trails. Along the way, we will be keeping our eyes open for elves and reindeer. Dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes. Bring a camera, water, snacks and some cash for the Land Trust if you are not a member. We will meet at the trailhead at 10130 Spragins Hollow Rd NW, Huntsville, AL 35810, at 7:45am. The hike leaves at 8:00am sharp. Leashed dogs capable of a 14 mike hike are welcome. Rain cancels this hike. Questions, contact Vickie at vtmouser38@gmail.com

Sunday, December 22 - Trough Springs Hike. Moderate.

Join us for a hike down to Trough Springs on the Land Trust property. This will be a moderate hike of about 5 miles. There will be  some short, steep climbs over uneven and rocky trails. Dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes. Bring a camera, water, snacks and some cash for the Land Trust if you are not a member. We will meet at 9:00am at the Land Trust Monte Sano South Parking Lot (1901-1999 Monte Sano Blvd SE). Leashed dogs are welcome. Rain cancels this hike. Saturday, December 28 - End of Year Hike on Monte Sano. Moderate.

Join us for an end of the year hike on Monte Sano on December 28. Kirsten will be leading a moderate hike of about 5 miles. There will be some short, steep climbs over uneven and rocky trails. Dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes. Bring a camera, water, snacks and some cash for the State Park Entrance Fee ($5). We will meet at 9:00am at the Hikers Parking Lot in the Monte Sano State Park - 5105 Nolen Ave SE, Huntsville, AL 35801. Leashed dogs are welcome. Rain cancels this hike.
