About Us

U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt with Sierra Club Founder John Muir

The Sierra Club is one of the oldest and most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the United States. It was founded on May 28, 1892 in San Francisco, California, by the Scottish-American preservationist John Muir.

In 1966, an Arizona Chapter (The Grand Canyon Chapter) was formed to focus attention on stopping dams in the Grand Canyon. Our work to protect the Colorado River and Grand Canyon National Park continues today.

The Palo Verde Group is one of six groups that make up the Grand Canyon Chapter. The other Arizona groups include the Flagstaff's Plateau Group, the Sedona/Verde Valley Group, Prescott's Yavapai Group, Northern Maricopa County's Saguaro Group and Tucson's Rincon Group.

Sierra Club's Phoenix Palo Verde Group leads outings and conducts monthly programs and meetings that give members a chance to meet others with common interests and learn about conservation issues, hiking locations, updates on legislative issues or how to start a community garden. Register on our Meetup site and join us at our next Palo Verde Group event!
