The Sierra Club Genetic Engineering Committee invites you to view the Hidden Dangers in Kid's Meals DVD. After watching the scientists describe the potential dangers of these foods and the way in which the industry has manipulated our government agencies into approving them, we think that you may be motivated to join us in this campaign to improve school meals.
Our country's children are fed inadequately tested and unlabeled genetically engineered foods in their school meal programs but it doesn't have to be this way. We have examples of schools making different choices with surprising results. Wait until you hear about the schools in Appleton, Wisconsin on the Hidden Dangers DVD! By taking junk food out of the school meals (which included almost all the GMOs), the behavior and learning ability of the kids was dramatically transformed.
What we choose to take into our bodies as food is incorporated into our cells and becomes either a help or a hindrance to our overall health and well-being. With the rise in food allergies, obesity, diabetes, and other food related disorders, we have reason to believe that to care about our health is to care about our food choices. This is especially true for children. And a choice is only a choice when you have adequate information.
Normally, we would rely on the government to sort through the overwhelming data. The FDA, USDA, and EPA are the regulatory agencies that are supposed to make sure that our food does not impose unnecessary risks to our health and our environment. We've come to believe that if it is sold on a supermarket shelf or offered to our children in their school lunch then it must be safe. As we come to understand how often our government regulators have been swayed by corporate influence, we realize how our unquestioning faith in government can work against us. Never has this been more apparent than with the release of genetically engineered foods into the food web.
The fact that these novel foods haven't been properly tested for human safety is outrageous.
The fact that they are not labeled so that we can make choices is undemocratic.
The fact that our citizens have become part of a risky feeding experiment is unconscionable.
The fact that no one is tracking the impact of genetically engineered foods on public health defies commonsense.
