Carl Pope's Field Notes

No Questions, Please
21, 2004

I'm speaking at the annual environmental forum of the Cleveland City Club. My two previous speeches here were much more optimistic, given in brighter times, and you can sense the anxiety and worry people have for what is happening in this country. Global warming comes up with the audience as a significant issue. But perhaps most revealing is this comment by the Cleveland City Club's Executive Director: Every recent President except this one has accepted the Club's invitation to speak. After all, their radio feed reaches 2 million people.

But President Bush refused. Why?

His staff made it clear that the Club's absolute insistence that any guest engage in questions and answers with the audience was a deal breaker. So we have a President who not only won't look global warming in the face, he doesn't want to have a face to face conversation with the citizens of Cleveland quiz him. How sad.
