California's Coasts
The Great Coastal Places Campaign

Dorothy Bristol: Coastal Activist in the Spotlight

Dorothy "Sunny" Bristol
Mark Massara and Sunny Bristol at a coastal protection hearing in Sonoma County. Sunny’s commitment to the Great Coastal Places Letters-to-the-Editor team is truly helping us to protect our threatened coast for future generations.

Dorothy Bristol, or "Sunny" to her friends, is a native Californian who has spent 81 years enjoying the beautiful beaches and coastal views that make California famous. But rather than take her good fortune and wonderful experiences for granted, Sunny has made it her mission to help this campaign protect our fragile and threatened coast for future generations.

Sunny has taken the lead with our Letters-to-the-Editor writing team, writing and sending seven coastal-protection letters to newspapers from Santa Barbara Santa Rosa since March of this year. And Sunny has been remarkably successful!

Three of her letters have been published in the San Francisco Chronicle and the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. And since she sends us a copy of every letter she writes, even those letters that don’t make it in print can help our efforts. We have presented Sunny’s great letters to Governor Schwarzenegger and other statewide coastal decision makers to reinforce our message that Californians truly care about our precious coast.

Sunny’s effort is helping us to get the word out about the serious issues facing our coastline. Sunny believes that the coast belongs to all of us, not simply to those wealthy enough or lucky enough to live along it. And her efforts to promote public access are going to make a big difference in ensuring that future generations enjoy the same opportunities that she has.

Thank you, Sunny, for translating your concern into action and for showing us all that one person can make a difference for our threatened coast.
