Oceanside Development Defeated

BOARD NIXES PLANS FOR HUGE RESORT
Manchester Resorts, Oceanside, San Diego County, June 2002

After 5 long years, the citizens of Oceanside and the California Coastal Commission sent another hard message to the City of Oceanside. At its meeting in Long Beach on June 11, 2002, the California Coastal Commission with a unanimous vote pulled the plug on Manchester Resorts and Oceanside's Local Coastal Plan amendments. The Citizens for the Preservation of Parks and Beaches gathered three bus-loads of Oceanside residents to show up at the meeting and enforce the Coastal Commissioners’ recommendation to deny the amendments.

The Local Coastal Plan amendments proposed by the City of Oceanside were to accommodate Doug Manchester's vision of privatizing the beach and pier area of Oceanside with two 12-story towers. Closing public streets, bulldozing bluffs, controlling public parkland and removing public parking and access to public areas were not acceptable even in the name of economics. Defeating the Manchester project was a beautiful display of grassroots efforts.

Other development projects are surely in the works. Oceanside is a jewel in North County, with beautiful beaches that every developer would like to cash in on. It will take further vigilance to make sure that the California Coastal Act stays on track in Oceanside. Future development proposals to be aware of include the Renaissance Terrace Condo project that developers hope to build on the banks of the San Luis Rey River directly in front of a senior mobile home park. It should be on the Coastal Commission agenda either in October 2002 in Eureka or November 2002 in San Diego.
