CAMPAIGN PLAYS BIG PART IN LAND PURCHASE
Sea West Ranch, San Luis Obispo County, August 2003
The
state has completed its $14.5 million purchase of the Sea West Ranch
between Cambria and Cayucos, including a three-mile section of coastline
that is planned as the California Coastal Trail. The almost 750-acre
Sea West Ranch is made up of shoreline, tidelands, coastal bluffs,
wetlands, and gently sloping coastal terraces, and is home to more
than 400 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
This is a big victory for members of the Sierra Club's Great Coastal
Places Campaign who worked very hard for the last year to bring
about this purchase.
The purchase of this property near the Hearst Ranch on Central
California's beautiful coast has finally come about because hundreds
of campaign members responded to Mark Massara's plea to send in
postcards and letters to state funding agencies. The American Land
Conservancy, which had sought funding for this project for about
five years, reported that it was the huge volume of postcards that
resulted in the state providing the funding for this purchase.
