SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS FOREVER
Bringing people together to enjoy and protect our natural heritage.

A New Movement To Save Our Threatened Natural Heritage

Join Us To Work For:
  • Preservation of wilderness.
  • Protection of rivers for clean drinking water and recreation.
  • Creation of a San Gabriel Mountains National Recreation Area

The San Gabriel Mountains soar above our homes from Santa Clarita to San Bernardino, providing much of our public open space. These mountains benefit our quality of life and the health of our economy by providing us with clean air and water and incredible natural beauty. Over a million of us visit these mountains each year to escape the pace of city life and to hike, ride horses or mountain bikes, watch wildlife, or picnic with friends and family.

The importance of our local mountains grows each day. As more of the land around the San Gabriels is developed, the more important protecting our forest heritage becomes.

As recreational needs grow, services to forest visitors are declining.. Our region's youth obesity and diabetes crises have brought urgency to connecting people and communities back to our mountains and rivers.

Working Together To Provide a Solution

Our beloved San Gabriel Mountains face growing challenges and need a new champion. That‘s why local businesses, foothill residents, people of faith, community leaders, and health and conservation groups have created San Gabriel Mountains Forever.

Working together we can better protect our mountains and make sure that healthy, environmentally friendly recreational opportunities increase and are available to all. Forging better connections between our communities and the San Gabriels, we will inspire the next generation to care for these lands.

Keeping Wild Places Wild

As development encircles the mountains, we have a window of opportunity to protect scenic forest back country forever. Congress can designate wilderness areas and has before when it created the Sheep Mountain, Cucamonga, and San Gabriel Wilderness areas. Now we have the opportunity to expand these areas and bring wilderness protection to spectacular, unspoiled places like Pleasant View Ridge in the San Gabriels high country.

Caring for the Rivers of the San Gabriels

Our local rivers and creeks provide a vital source of clean drinking water for the cities of the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. The San Gabriel and other rivers are among the most popular places to visit and are also crucial for the survival of our native wildlife. Congress can protect our rivers as "wild and scenic." This designation ensures that wild stretches of rivers and creeks remain wild and that recreational opportunities are preserved.

Expanding Recreational Opportunities

The Angeles National Forest—the key agency managing our local mountains--plans to close down and reduce capacity and hours at scores of recreational facilities throughout the San Gabriels due to budget constraints. This means fewer chances for kids to see their first deer or sleep out under the stars. Heavily visited places like the San Gabriel River do not have adequate bathrooms, enough trash cans, or safe river access. Visitors say they want more information about other places to visit but don't how to get it. Staff and summer interns are needed to educate visitors about the natural environment and healthy recreational opportunities. Working together, we can create a plan for a better future.

How you can help

The San Gabriel Mountains need your support. You can help out by joining San Gabriel Mountains Forever. You will have the chance to go on hikes, talk about the campaign with neighbors and community groups, write letters, make new friends, and work on forest restoration efforts. Join San Gabriel Mountains Forever.
