Caring for Creation Program
 |
| Juana Torres, forests campaign staff member seen
here at Switzer Falls in the Angeles National Forest helps to coordinate
the Caring for Creation program. |
The new “Caring for Creation” (downloadable
PDF) program introduces people of faith to the national forests through presentations,
meditative
walks and hikes and
service projects in an effort to protect our local mountains and help people
of faith further their spiritual journeys. The program focuses on the many spiritual
and intrinsic values that wilderness areas offer.
Campaign staffer and long-time Catholic youth-group leader Juana Torres is working
with faith organizations to bring in new voices, perspectives and ideas on how
to care for our forests through the following ways:
Presentations to church groups and ministries that include a slideshow of scenic
local forest pictures and scriptures that talk about creation and the duty of
people of faith to protect their natural legacy.

Meditative and reflective walks and hikes into the forests allow people to experience
first-hand the beauty of creation.
Restoration, service and volunteer projects like planting trees, restoring trails
or helping to survey animals are great ways of aligning belief with action. The
campaign can connect interested people to these opportunities both within and
outside of the Sierra Club.
Open to all people of faith, some current participants include the Los Angeles
Catholic Archdiocese and Progressive Christians Uniting.
