Clean Air
Clean Air and Smart Energy Solutions

Clean air is one of our most basic needs. Everyone deserves to breathe air that is safe and that will not cause death or disease. These days, protecting and cleaning up our nation's air means looking at our biggest polluters—including most importantly our sources of energy.

Fortunately, when enforced the Clean Air Act gives us the opportunity to address these problems and realize real improvements in air quality nationwide. Right now, states are updating their clean air plans to prove to the EPA that they can provide safe and healthy air for their communities.

State Implementation Plans
Every state must have a State Implementation Plan (SIP) that shows how it will meet national air standards and maintain safe air quality for its residents into the future. These SIPs are updated periodically in each state, and are an excellent opportunity to clean up your community's air and advance smart energy solutions.
Find out more about State Implementation Plans and access our activist toolkit.

The Clean Air Interstate Rule
The Clean Air Interstate Rule, or CAIR, is a regional air pollution reduction program covering 28 eastern states and the District of Columbia. This program requires roughly 70% soot and smog pollution reductions from power plants by 2015. As a cap-and-trade program, states have some flexibility to favor clean energy projects and discourage high polluting power plants.
Read more about CAIR, including pointers for smart solutions you can advocate for in your state.
