Clean Water

States Voice Strong Opposition

Who is the Bush Administration listening to when deciding to stop protecting our waters? 35 state environmental and natural resource agencies, including those of Florida and Texas, are troubled by the Bush Administration's plan to weaken the Clean Water Act, yet the administration is charging ahead with it. Of the 42 states that commented on the plan 39 opposed it. 17 of the states in opposition have Republican Governors.

Bowing to developers, mining companies and industrial polluters, the Bush Administration is considering a measure that could remove Clean Water Act protections from many of our nation's wetlands and so-called isolated waters. In fact, the EPA estimates that 20% of our wetlands are already endangered by the administration's actions and more could face destruction and contamination in the future.

For 30 years, the Clean Water Act has safeguarded and cleaned up our waters and wetlands. Americans know how to protect our water and we know we can do better. The Bush Administration should strengthen clean water protections instead of creating loopholes for polluters.
