About Face: EPA Accepts Stricter Standard for Arsenic Levels in Drinking Water
Seven months after suspending a Clinton proposal to lower acceptable levels of the carcinogen from 50 parts per billion to a recommended maximum of 10, the EPA has announced that it will accept the previously proposed level after all. The reversal comes after considerable public outcry and heated criticism from environmental groups including the Sierra Club.
Some published reports have suggested that the current administration accepted the new standard to block even higher arsenic safety standards in the original legislation.
