PUBLIC HEARING ON WATER PERMITS FOR PROPOSED PLANT WASHINGTON COAL PLANT
  • WHAT: Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD)
PUBLIC HEARING on POLLUTION LEVELS for proposed
PLANT WASHINGTON coal-fired plant
  • WHEN: Tuesday, DEC. 7, 2010
6 p.m. Information Session and Press Briefing
7 p.m. EPD Hearing
  • WHERE: Ridge Road Elementary School,
285 Ridge Road, Sandersville, GA, 31082
From 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Ridge Road Elementary School in Sandersville, GA, Georgians for Smart Energy (GSE), will provide an information session and press briefing on water issues related to Plant Washington. GSE is a major coalition of energy, citizen and environmental organizations from across Georgia, including residents of Washington County. Members of the media and citizens who want to learn more about the many serious issues regarding the proposed Plant
Washington coal plant are urged to attend this 6 p.m. pre-event. Concerned citizens from the area and experts will provide a wealth of information during this hour.
Following this session, at 7 p.m., the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) will conduct a public hearing on Plant Washington. This coal-fired power plant, proposed by Power4Georgians, LLC, would be located near Sandersville in Middle Georgia.
The subject of the hearing is the water withdrawal permit and the water discharge permit (NPDES permit), which were sent back to Georgia EPD after GSE groups challenged them.
If built, the water used at the power plant would be piped 30 miles from the Oconee River and drawn from 15 groundwater wells near the proposed plant site. Much of the water drawn from the Oconee will be evaporated during the cooling process in the Ogeechee River Basin, therefore an Inter-Basin Transfer is taking place, which requires notice and public comment.
