Beyond Coal Indiana
In Rockport, Indiana, Governor Daniels supports a plan that would enable a private company—Indiana Gasification LLC — to build a multi-billion dollar coal-gasification plant on the Ohio River and force Indiana natural gas customers to buy the gas it produces. The proposal, put forward by a New York conglomerate (Leucadia National Corporation), run by two of the wealthiest men in America, could be a good deal for its backers and investors but it’s a bad deal for Hoosiers. Read more on our Energy in Indiana page and please voice your opinion at the April hearings or by contacting the Governor.
In Edwardsport, Indiana, an area already saturated with coal-fired generators, Duke Energy and Vectren are teaming up to build a 630 megawatt coal gasification electrical power plant. With the hopes of receiving federal money from the current stimulus bill, Duke Energy is planning a very pricey study to look into a possible carbon storage facility. However, even if this new carbon storage facility is successful in capturing up to 60% of its carbon, they will still be emitting an estimated 4 million tons of CO2 per year! Indiana is resisting this new coal plant and we need all the help we can get - if you're interested in the fight against coal outside the court room, join our social networking site, Climate Crossroads, to start your own grassroots movement and find others who share your concerns.
