Beyond Coal Mississippi

The Sierra Club in Mississippi has been leading the charge to stop Southern Company from proceeding with the permitting of a dirty and outrageously expensive IGCC Lignite Coal Plant in Kemper County Mississippi. The Club has intervened in the Certificate of Necessity proceeding before the Ms. Public Service Commission providing expert witnesses and legal expertise to challenge assertions regarding the "Need" for such a facility.

The Club has offered alternatives such as energy conservation and efficiency; demand side management; and to tap existing clean modern natural gas plants. These are important steps to move Mississippi toward a clean, affordable energy future.

We have and will continue to shine a light on and expose the myths and erroneous information being promoted by Southern Company and its cronies. We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past simply to enrich Southern Company and its stockholders.
