Beyond Coal North Carolina

North Carolina has 67 operating coal-fired power units at 25 locations totaling 13,279 megawatts (MW). In addition, North Carolina is home to 24 coal ash ponds at 14 plants and 13 of these ponds are rated as high hazard ponds presenting a real danger to our health. North Carolina produces of 3.5 million tons of coal ash each year and ranks 11th in the country for generation.

In October of 2010, Charlotte, NC was host to one of 8 federal EPA hearings to hear comments on proposed regulations on coal ash. Over 175 enthusiastic activists turned out at the hearing to speak out for public health and urge the epa to protect our communities form toxic coal ash. Looking ahead, we are continuing to urge Congress and the EPA to do the right thing and designate coal ash as a hazardous waste.

We continue to actively engage volunteers in campaigns to push North Carolina beyond coal. Get involved in your local campaign today by emailing Sierra Club Regional Conservation Organizer with the Beyond Coal Campaign Erica Geppi erica.geppi@sierraclub.org to learn more about how we are fighting coal in your backyard!
