2011.07.07 Press Release

Proposed Baryonyx Offshore Wind Project under Review

Additional Info: Sierra Club State Capitol Report Article on Baryonyx ProjectThe wind farm would be off the Texas Coast

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a public notice requesting comments on an application by Baryonyx Corporation for permits necessary to construct a 500-turbine wind farm in three areas along the Texas coast leased from the Texas General Land Office (the areas underlay “state waters” off the coast which are under the jurisdiction of the GLO). The areas are referred to as the Mustang Lease, the North Rio Grande Lease, and the Rio Grande Lease. These areas are located in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from Nueces, Kleberg, Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Counties.

The Corps issued its public notice on June 15 and requested public comments by July 18. Based on information provided by the applicant, the /corps has made a preliminary determination that no environmental impact statement (EIS) is required in order for the Corps permits to be issued. However, one of the purposes of the public comment period is to seek information that might change that initial determination, and some concerns are being raised that might well lead to an EIS process.
