Washington's Dirty Secret:

TransAlta Coal Plant to be closing down

The TransAlta coal plant releases more global warming pollution than anything else in the state of Washington. While the rest of the state works hard to reduce greenhouse gas pollution, this plant continues to burn dirty coal. It damages our environment with haze pollution, poisons our bodies with toxic mercury and delays the creation of clean energy jobs. We can do better.

The Dirty Truth About TransAlta:

  • Coal is poisonous. TransAlta is the state's largest source of toxic mercury which is especially dangerous for children and future mothers.
  • Coal is ugly. Haze caused by nitrogen oxide pollution from the TransAlta coal plant is damaging the pristine beauty of a dozen national parks and wilderness areas, including Mt. Rainier.
  • Coal is unhealthy. Washington State estimates that coal will cost the state more than $19 million in health costs over the next decade.
  • Coal threatens our future. Every year, the TransAlta coal plant spews out 9 million tons of global warming pollution, more than anything else in Washington.

We Are Doing Better:

  • WE CAN stop global warming and create a healthier environment by using renewable energy to replace coal.
  • WE CAN meet our new electricity needs with wind, solar and energy efficiency. This will reduce utility bills and save us money.
  • WE CAN repower the Washington state economy by creating thousands of clean energy jobs.
