SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES STORMWATER BALLOT MEASURE

The Pikes Peak Group of the Sierra Club has endorsed Ballot Issue 2A, which establishes a stormwater fee for the City of Colorado Springs.

The measure, which will be on the City of Colorado Springs’ November 7th ballot, would raise approximately $17 million per year through a stormwater fee added to monthly utility bills.  Residential units would pay a $5 monthly fee and nonresidential property would pay a fee of $30 per acre per month.  The money would be used exclusively for stormwater infrastructure, maintenance, and operations.

“We are all affected by stormwater runoff.  Even if we do not live in a floodplain, we drive through streets that are prone to flooding, we rely on infrastructure that must be protected from stormwater damage, we use parks that are threatened by erosion, and we all face the risk of a catastrophic storm event,” said Jane Ard-Smith, Chair of the Pikes Peak Group. “Passage of this measure is crucial not only to protect our city and the environment, but also to meet our commitments to downstream communities affected by our stormwater runoff.”

The Sierra Club is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet. The Pikes Peak Group has 2,000 members in the Pikes Peak region.
