The COMPASS (Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea) program is a collaborative effort to advance marine conservation science and policy by sharing emerging science via symposia, publishing, networking and media outreach. Our goal is to build capacity within the marine conservation community for new thinking and strategic action around critical issues, and to communicate new science to media, policymakers and the public.

Seafood Guides

FishPort
The cornerstone of the FAO's Aquatic Food Product Initiative, unveiled in Rome earlier this spring and supported jointly by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Through the international collaboration of the scientific community, FishPort will help make cutting-edge information on fisheries and seafood science equally accessible to both developed and developing countries. The hope is that this information will help improve the quality and safety of seafood products

Sustainable Seafood: Good for the Environment and Your Business
When it comes to seafood, environmental sustainability and business success can go hand in hand. Retailing seafood products that are caught or raised in an environmentally sensitive manner not only benefits the health of the oceans, but it can also provide many opportunities to improve the growth and sustainability of seafood businesses. Based on extensive research, our new Business Guide to Sustainable Seafood identifies cost competitive and environmentally preferable choices in all major seafood product categories. The report also provides in-depth information on 40 environmentally preferable kinds of seafood, including retail and wholesale price ranges, availability, production methods, buying advice, and taste/texture. Armed with good information, businesses can play a powerful role in supporting sustainable fisheries and clean aquaculture operations-and in the process both respond to rising consumer concerns and invest in the long-term viability of their business.

Seafood Choices Alliance
The Seafood Choices Alliance seeks to bring ocean conservation to the table by providing the seafood sector - fishermen, chefs and other purveyors - with the information they need to make sound choices about seafood and provide the best options to their customers. By working collaboratively with partners from conservation organizations, we connect professionals from the seafood and conservation community.

Seafood Lover's Guide
Living Oceans' Seafood Lovers Initiative helps you become more familiar with the fish and shellfish you buy so that you can make choices toward better managed selections. The buying power of consumers can create a market environment that encourages sustainable seafood and abundance in the seas.

Seafood Watch
A program of Monterey Bay Aquarium designed to raise consumer awareness about the importance of buying seafood from sustainable sources. We recommend which seafood to buy or avoid, helping consumers to become advocates for environmentally friendly seafood.

Fish Advisories

EPA Fish Advisories
The states, U.S. Territories and Native American tribes have primary responsibility for protecting their residents from the health risks of consuming contaminated noncommercially caught fish. They do this by issuing consumption advisories for the general population as well as for specific vulnerable subpopulations. These advisories tell the public when high concentrations of chemical contaminants have been found in local fish. They also include recommendations to limit or avoid eating certain fish species from specific waterbodies or waterbody types.
