Recreation Issues Committee

bikerThe Recreation Issues Committee's mission is to assist volunteers, build networks and help coordinate the Club's conservation efforts on recreation issues.

Recreation issues include but are not limited to: motorized recreation (ORVs, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, jet-skis, etc), use conflicts, noise impacts, park overflights, bicycles, trails, appropriate and accessible recreation, resource protection from recreation impacts (including protection of Wilderness resources), recreation fees and commercialization / privatization of recreation on public lands.

Members of the Sierra Club's national Recreation Issues Committee are available to assist you should you and your Chapter or Group wish to pursue recreation-related advocacy, education or litigation. If you would like our support or would like to sponsor a talk and slide show on recreation issues, please contact our Staff Liaison, Athan Manuel.

News
Sierra Club issues report

Thanks to the efforts of the Sierra Club and many other organizations and individuals, the Forest Service is finally taking concrete steps to control and regulate Off Road Vehicle use on public lands. All national forests must comply with the National Off Road Vehicle Rule, meaning they must designate routes for ORVs, with all other routes and areas closed.

Montana's Gallatin National Forest, just north of Yellowstone Park, is a case study of travel planning. With the Gallatin Travel Plan completed and now being implemented, it's worth taking a close look at how effective this plan is.

One way to assess the effectiveness of travel planning is to take a close look on the land as the plan is being implemented. That is exactly what we did, and you can, too. Read the report.
