Historic Perspective
In 1907 the Sierra Club began and lost our first river fight to preserve the Hetch Hetchy Valley and the Tuolomne River. You can read more here.

"Dam Hetch Hetchy! As well dam for water-tanks the people's cathedrals and churches, for no holier temple has ever been consecrated by the heart of man."
-- John Muir
In 1956 Federal water developers drop plans to dam Dinosaur National Monument, but begin construction of Glen Canyon Dam.
Years later a fight to decommission Glen Canyon dam was also lost but the activism that lead these fights still lives on and will continue to fight wherever we see threats to our precious rivers and streams.
Mission
The mission of the Sierra Club's National Rivers Committee is to provide assistance
to volunteers in addressing river issues, outreach to Sierra Club activists and staff
working on these issues, and coordinate the Club's key conservation efforts on
these issues.
Learn more about our goals and issues here.
On July 18th - July 20th we held a meeting in Portland, Oregon to discuss our future and the possible creation of a new Team called the Water Planet Coordination Team. Click here to access information about that meeting.
