Building Environmental Community: Houston, Texas

Safe and Healthy Communties...(cont.)

Children are taught a very simple rule, that if they make a mess, they have to clean it up. Yet every day they see the powers-that-be letting big polluters off the hook and place entire communities at risk. The bottom line is: we all want neighborhoods that are safe and healthy places to live and raise children. We all want nature close by—trees, gardens, parks, and wild places where we can play. We all want a say in how and where our communities grow and get better. And we all want neighbors who have more than a zip code in common with us, who will work with us to protect what we love—our homes and families.

So how do we get the poisons out of our air and water, increase community involvement in decisions that affect our neighborhoods, keep our communities safe and clean, and make sure industries are held responsible for their messes? By working as neighbors together, motivated by common concerns and shared values in pursuit of real-world solutions. The Sierra Club's "Building Environmental Community" campaign invites you to join us in doing just that. It's a plan to pull you in and make you an active participant, part of a community built on five core principles:

  • Our neighborhoods should be safe, healthy, and poison-free.
  • Working together, we can solve our problems.
  • Everyone has a part to play.
  • Bad actors should be held responsible.
  • Participation is power.

In Houston our BEC campaign is working to keep our communities safe and healthy. Our objectives for 2006 are two-fold:
  • Ongoing community awareness and involvement in the remediation and redevelopment plans for the Many Diversified Interest (MDI) Superfund site, a 36 acre toxic waste site located 3617 Baer in the heart of the Fifth Ward community.
  • Opposition to the permit approval for expansion plans for the 503 acre Brown Ferris Industries (BFI) McCarty Rd. landfill, located 5757 Oates Rd in northeast Houston.

If you would like to get involved or for more information on our local BEC campaign contact Reginald Adams, BEC Conservation Organizer, at 713.521.3981 or email reginald.adams@sierraclub.org. Or click on the gray box below and Reginald will get in touch with you.
