Building Environmental Community: Las Vegas, Nevada

With Growth Come Challenges for Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Valley is one of the fastest growing communities in the nation. Growth in the valley has brought us a booming economy, increased home values and more variety in our recreation and entertainment options. Both long and short term residents love the excitement of our city and the beauty of the natural areas that surround us like Red Rock National Conservation Area, Lake Mead and the Spring Mountains.

With growth come challenges and opportunities. Global warming is an ever increasing challenge across the globe but Nevada has an opportunity to lead the way into a sustainable energy future. Nevada is already a leader in Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) ensuring 20 percent of our electrical power comes from renewable resources, like geothermal and solar. We are urging the Public Utilities Commission to actively seek implementation of our Renewable Energy Portfolio, which means new solar, wind, and conservation power sources for Nevadans. Developing these industries in our state will provide us with a safe and profitable economy without exposing us to the hazards of projects like the Yucca Mountain repository.

Hybrid Car Rally
Hybrid cars, like those featured at this rally, are a way to help make our county a "Cool County."

The Building Environmental Communities program in Las Vegas has kicked off a “Cool County” campaign to support the Mayor’s Protection Agreement. This agreement calls for cities to think outside the box when addressing energy and energy conservation. We will be focusing on increasing the recycling rate for Clark County, assisting the counties’ largest energy consumer, Clark County School District, in energy conservation and full implementation of the Renewable Portfolio Standards.

We need your help in building social networks of people having face to face connections with their neighbors, friends and co-workers; showing a presence at public meetings; and demanding accountability of our county/city officials.
