Building Environmental Community: Las Vegas, Nevada

Earth Day Las Vegas!

trail workers
Workin' on the a trail from Tecopa Springs to China Ranch.

Las Vegas celebrated Earth Day with a joint BEC/Southern Nevada Group service trip for members and volunteers with a theme of "Care About America? Care for America!"

On Saturday, April 23rd, 35 volunteers, including three of our four BEC Steering Committee Members and their families, showed up bright and early to board the bus to travel to Tecopa Springs about 90 miles outside of Vegas. Our mission was to help build and repair the trail from Tecopa Springs to China Ranch in the beautiful and scenic Amargosa Valley.

We arrived ready to work by about 9 am and because there were so many of us we had already finished the work by 10:30. The Bureau of Land Management ranger was so impressed with our work that they gave us more to do and we successfully built a little over a mile of trail.

We finished up the additional work by about 2:30 and drove to China Ranch to have a picnic lunch and take part in the infamous China Ranch date shake. All of our volunteers had an opportunity to taste a famous date shake (which was actually pretty good!) and learned about the history of the area. We then loaded up and headed back to Las Vegas tired but feeling good about the work we did for Earth Day.

John DeCock
John DeCock, executive director of The Sierra Club Foundation, applied some elbow grease during an Earth Day event in Las Vegas.

Our special guest, John DeCock, Executive Director of the Sierra Club Foundation, spoke to volunteers about the BEC program and the local campaigns that the Sierra Club is working on in the Valley. He inspired and spoke one on one with volunteers answering questions they had. Overall, the volunteers feltvery honored to have Mr. DeCock along with us.

We are excited to say that the majority of our volunteers on Saturday were new faces!
