Building Environmental Community: Lincoln, Nebraska

Working to Clean Up Animal Feeding Operations

Earth Day volunteers take a pizza break after going door-to-door in Hebron, Nebraska.

Nebraska has had a CAFO (confined animal feeding operation) organizing campaign for over 4 years. Most of our work involves organizing in rural communities faced with a possible CAFO coming in or dealing with an existing CAFO causing environmental problems. These problems come in many forms; pollution to air, water and land, property values, economic impacts and over use of antibiotic. We also work to educate the public about the importance of supporting family farmers and responsible producers by buying food from local Nebraska producers.

Some of our work includes litigation to protect citizen’s rights in the public process and to protect the environment. The Sierra Club in Nebraska has been partnering with The Great Plains Environmental Law Center in Omaha to achieve these goals.
Organizer Laura Krebsbach invites you to get involved!

For example, the Nebraska Court of Appeals ruled that an operator of hog confinement facilities in Boone and Nance counties must pay damages to 11 landowners impacted by odors coming from those facilities. And the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled April 28, 2005, in favor of Jefferson County residents, reversing a lower court’s decision dismissing a citizens suit in Jefferson County. The Citizens Opposing Industrial Livestock are now planning to join with other rural groups to see that as many people as possible get involved with protecting natural resources. Finally, on April 8 the Court ruled that two hog-feeding operations near McCook, Nebraska, were constructed in bad faith and violated local zoning regulations.

But most importantly we provide information and support on how to organize friends and neighbors on how to participate in the public process to protect their communities and quality of life.
