Help Us Make Milwaukee Greener!

The greening of Metro Milwaukee for a healthy community, with emphasis on better water management, is the focus of our Building Environmental Community program for 2006.

  • The vitality of Milwaukee is integrally tied to the health of the Lake Michigan Watershed. While environmental policies like the Clean Water Act have been successful in reducing pollution, the Great Lakes today still face a tide of environmental threats – due largely to insufficient funding of environmental monitoring and protection, and the emergence of new environmental problems. Pollution is still closing beaches and contaminating Great Lakes fish. Habitat destruction threatens the survival of Great Lakes fish and wildlife, and the fishing and tourism industries that depend upon them.   Additionally, special interests are maneuvering to buy and sell Great Lakes water for a profit.

  • Clean water” and Great Lakes protection are a top priority of the Milwaukee BEC campaign.  We will seek local solutions to the problem of sewage overflows and mercury pollution, and will advocate for Milwaukee to take specific actions to establish itself as a green city and a leader in implementing local actions that contribute to Great Lakes protection and restoration. In addition, we see a potential opportunity to engage in the issue of urban redevelopment and revitalization.  This issue is related to clean water in the sense that many of the sites that are a priority for cleanup and redevelopment are contaminated sites that contribute to Great Lakes water pollution and certainly pose a threat to human health.  In addition, restoring contaminated urban sites is a priority of the regional Great Lakes Restoration Agenda The issue also presents the opportunity to develop strong relationships with labor, the faith community and others interested in creating good jobs, a healthy environment, and livable cities and to do one-on-one outreach and organizing in areas slated as a priority for redevelopment.
