Sierra Club Water Day of Action
On Saturday, September 29, 2007, twenty-seven Sierra Club members and activists stenciled 178 storm drains in Rochester Hills. We also knocked on 300 doors and encouraged 65 people to sign our petition to Governor Granholm to stop industrial pollution from entering our Great Lakes.

Protecting our Great Lakes
While environmental policies like the Clean Water Act have been successful in reducing pollution, the Great Lakes today still face a tide of environmental threats – due largely to insufficient funding of environmental monitoring and protection, and the emergence of new environmental problems. Pollution is still closing beaches and contaminating Great Lakes fish. Habitat destruction and invasive species threaten the survival of Great Lakes fish and wildlife. Additionally, special interests are maneuvering to buy and sell Great Lakes water for a profit. At the local level, the use of fertilizers and pesticides we use for lawn care are also affecting the water quality of Oakland County. We enjoy and depend on the dozens of local lakes and the Great Lakes for everything from recreation to the fish we eat to the water we drink. Let's make Loving our Lakes a reality by asking our neighbors to lead by example at their own homes and speak out to ask our city leaders to join together to create a forceful Great Lakes Restoration strategy to make the Michigan's lakes clean and safe.

Cool Cities
All over America, cities, counties and states are launching an exciting grassroots movement to help solve one of our country's most pressing problems: global warming. Communities in Oakland County are taking action to help solve global warming with smart energy solutions that make a real difference. With the encouragement of Sierra Club members and volunteers, more and more cities are signing up to become Cool Cities. Begun in 2005, the Cool Cities campaign empowers city residents and local leaders to encourage their cities to implement smart energy solutions that save taxpayer dollars and build.
