building environmental community: Oakland, MI

The success of the Sierra Club's Building Environmental Communities campaign in Oakland County will depend upon volunteers - people like YOU - who care enough about our environment to get involved. The main goals of this campaign are to:

  • Identify people in Oakland County who care about the environment.
  • Raise their level of awareness about local environmental problems and provide solutions.
  • Motivate people who care about the environment to become "activists" to help us spread the word about the Bush administration's assault on the environment.

Join one or more of our activities designed to reach these goals!

Activist Nights - Join like-minded souls as we cheerfully handle the tasks inherent in any campaign - filing, making phone calls, data entry, folding and stuffing mailings an

d more! Free food, drinks and fun every Wednesday night at the Clawson Sierra Club office. Come anytime between 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Community Walks - What better way to find out who cares about the environment than to go out and simply ask people! We'll be conducting community walks in neighborhoods all around Oakland County. Volunteers walk in teams of two, visiting neighbors door to door - and asking folks to sign a postcard or petition indicating their concern about pollution to Michigan’s lakes and streams Walks are fun! You meet new people, get some exercise, and perform a critical task - helping us identify environmental supporters.

Community Meetings - Community meetings allow us to provide an overview of the Building Environmental Communities campaign to potential volunteer activists. These gatherings will also include issue information (such as why Michiganders are advised not to eat their own sport fish) and volunteer trainings for additional outreach activities. Meet lots of people in your community who care about the same issues you care about!

Meet Ups - What's more fun than sitting around chatting with like-minded people about issues of shared passion – like mercury in our fish, or sewage in our water! Ah ha! A meet-up over a "cupa" java or mug of beer! Join one of our Ecos & Espresso meet-ups - or set up a Sierra Club and Beer event at your local pub! Help us recruit volunteers and spread the enthusiasm for this campaign.

House Parties - Do you like having social events at your house? Invite your friends, nearby Sierra Club members and have some fun! House parties will be neighborhood-based events designed to bring together people who care about the environment, recruit new volunteers and share a laugh and some great food. Think up your own theme for a house party - like a backyard BBQ, street party, wine tasting, whatever! We'll help get the invitations out and even give you an allowance for refreshments!

Tabling Events - Know of any good gathering places where outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers and environmentalists congregate? How about a health food store, farmer's market, community or river cleanup? These venues are ripe with potential volunteers that we'd like to meet. We can provide a Sierra Club exhibit with postcards, petitions, useful information for volunteer recruitment and spreading the word about the Bush Administration's failure to protect Michigan's communities.

Postcarding - Take our message to the streets! Know of any good, lively places where we might hang out with clipboards and postcards - spreading the word and recruiting volunteers? The main street of your town on a warm summer evening buzzing with activity? Let us know and we'll set you up with everything you need!

Letters to the Editor (LTE) Corp - Got a flair for writing? We're looking for writers who can help us fill the local papers with messages about the environment. We'll provide the seeds of letters to the editor on a variety of issues - you do the rest! See your name in print and help spread the word!

Dream Something Up! - If you're motivated and creative, come up with an idea for helping spread the word! We're open to the creative minds of our volunteers - so put your ideas forward and let's see what develops!

Like a snowball rolling downhill, we want the enthusiasm and volunteer spirit of this campaign to grow and gain momentum as we go! Working together, we can make a difference, and put an end to the Bush Administration's assault on the environment. Join us! To learn more about what’s happening to our environmental laws, please consider joining our Building Environmental Community campaign in Oakland County. You don’t have to be a Sierra Club member to help us out, so invite your friends.
