Sierra Club Water Day of Action

On Saturday, September 29, twenty-seven Sierra Club members and activists stenciled 178 storm drains in Rochester Hills. We also knocked on 300 doors and encouraged 65 people to sign our petition to Governor Granholm to stop industrial pollution from entering our Great Lakes.

For more information on this project and how you can protect the Great Lakes, email Melissa.Damaschke@sierraclub.org.

Sierra Club Activists Brian Reynolds and Doug Mills carefully spray paint, 'Dump No Waste, Drains to River' next to a storm drain in Rochester Hills.

This is what a finished stenciled storm drain looks like. Very cool!!!

Sierra Club Member Don Hughes leaves door hangers on residents doors who are not home.

2007 Storm Drain Stencilers!

Tips to PROTECT Our Water:

  • Reduce the amount of trash you create and recycle whenever possible!
  • When cleaning your home, use non-toxic cleaning supplies such as baking soda and vinegar.
  • DO NOT pour chemicals down the drain. Keep them in their original containers, tightly sealed and wrapped, and call your city or county waste center for disposal instructions. ( OaklandCountyDrainCommissioner = (248) 858-0958)
  • Make sure you use fertilizers that do not have phosphorus. Look for a ?0? in the middle of the three numbers on fertilizer bags.
  • Use natural alternatives instead of chemicals to take care of lawn pests.
  • Keep litter and leaves out of your street?s storm drains.
  • Make sure to not pour any oil, chemicals, or paint down your storm drain. What is poured in the drain goes directly to the local river or lake.

Tips to CONSERVE Our Water:

  • Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth and washing dishes by hand.
  • Take short showers instead of baths.
  • A toilet flushes up to 7 gallons! Fill a plastic bottle with water and place it in your toilet tank to displace water and save up to 5,000 gallons per year!
  • Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are completely full. You could save up to 1,000 gallons a month!
  • Instead of letting the water run in the sink when you want a cool drink, keep a jug or pitcher cooling in the refrigerator.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway.
  • Fix leaks. Just a slow drip can add up to 15 or 20 gallons a day.
