The Omaha Energy Challenge
A recent carbon emissions inventory found that about 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions in Omaha come from the build environment and only about 20% come from vehicle transportation. In light of this recent finding Mayor Fahey announced the Omaha Energy Challenge in which he asked every Omaha resident to switch from traditional incandescent light bulbs to low energy compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs in April 2007.
Answering his own challenge Mayor Fahey has been switching the light bulbs in the Mayor's office and is also switching the traffic lights in the city to low energy LED lights.
Also answering the challenge were local hardware stores. CJ's Home Center (80th and Harrison) and Center Ace Hardware (55th and Center) offered discounts on CFL bulbs during the month of April. In addition Home Depot stores across the city gave away free CFL bulbs on Earth Day. Just about any store in Omaha that sells light bulbs also carries CFL bulbs. It couldn't be easier to take the Omaha Energy Challenge.
So don’t delay go out and get your CFL today, then tell us your energy saving story!
We want to hear from you. Why did you switch? What savings have you experienced? What other actions have you taken in your home to be more energy efficient? Tell us your story!
