Sierra Club's Cool Cities Program Works With Owensboro to Bring On a Hybrid!

hybrid car signThe City of Owensboro on April 2 unveiled its newest addition -- a light green hybrid Prius that will be used for education as well as for city officials to drive. The design was chosen by people going to the web site and voting from several possible designs. Aabout 20 Sierra Club members were on hand and all wearing "Be Cool, Go Green" shirts. The Mayor Pro Tem, Commissioner Al Mattingly, and Lelan Hancock, who is in charge of the City's Cool Cities Program, both wore their shirts as did several other city employees. Read about the event here.

Shown in front of the new hybrid are, left to right, Donnie Mayton, Ben Taylor (Pennyrile Group Chair), Aloma Dew (BEC organizer), Carol Mark, Lee Dew (Western KY. Water Sentinels director), Lelan Hancock (Facilities Maintence Supertintendent and director of Cool Cities program for Owensboro). In back is Mayor Pro-tem Commissioner Al Mattingly.
Abby Shelton
Abby Shelton, working with Lelan Hancock, and others at City Hall, did much of the work to make this car and design possible. This is her next to our banner which we hung from dogwood trees in front of City Hall for the presentation.

Sierra Club volunteer Donnie Mayton, who drives a hybrid Camry, explains to city employees how it works. Volunteers are in the background.
