Pennsylvania's Choice for '08: Clean Energy

This year Pennsylvanians have a choice. We can move forward to create good-paying green jobs, ensure a more secure nation and curb global warming. Or we can stay stuck in the past, polluting our communities with dirty coal and oil, and condemning our country to the worst consequences of climate change.

Building Environmental Community in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Curbing global warming is the most urgent challenge facing us today. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to take significant action, and to avoid catastrophic consequences of warming we must meet the goal of reducing our global warming emissions 80% by 2050. We have the technology and ideas right now to solve this challenge - we just need our leaders at every level of government to take action and invest in smart energy solutions - like hybrid cars, renewable energy and energy efficiency - that curb global warming and other pollution-causing emissions from dirty coal, oil and other fossil fuels.

In 2008 we have an historic opportunity for Pennsylvania to take real steps towards a new energy future that is clean, reduces carbon emissions and builds a new energy economy. The Sierra Club in Pennsylvania and our partners are working to empower concerned citizens to take action, hold decision makers accountable, and build support for visionary action at the local, state, and federal levels.

The two main goals of our 2008 campaign are to:

Implement Smart Energy Solutions. The answers are here--PA no longer needs to live in the past of dirty fossil fuels, reckless energy consumption and a stagnant economy. At the municipal, county, state and federal level we are working with decision makers to implement policies that encourage and enforce energy efficiency, renewable energy sources like wind and solar, and energy conservation.

Stop the Coal Rush. Coal-fired power plants are a leading cause of respiratory illness, and already account for over 40% of our nation's carbon dioxide emissions, the lead cause of global warming. PA is an exporter of electricity so additional plants are not needed to meet local demand. The Sierra Club will work to stop new coal facilities by working to remove public subsidies for polluting technologies and stop construction of new coal plants in the state.

Sign our petition to Governor Rendell in support of cutting PA's global warming pollution and creating good, green jobs.

More about our Western PA Cool Cities campaign:
Building Environmental Community Pittsburgh, PA

In 2002, the Sierra Club launched the BEC program in key states around the country, including Pennsylvania. The goal of BEC is to engage community members at a very personal level and reinvigorate our national value of a clean and healthy environment for all citizens. With your help, we have talked to thousands of citizens in the Pittsburgh area about a variety of issues over the past three years! Please keep involved in this important and successful campaign!

From the Poconos to the Three Rivers, the Allegheny National Forest to the Amish farming communities, the natural heritage of Pennsylvania has always been of special importance to our residents and civic leaders. Western Pennsylvania has benefited dramatically from the environmental progress made over the last 30 years. Since the Clean Air Act was enacted in 1970, air quality has improved in many regions of our country; dozens of toxic contaminated sites have been designated for clean up under the federal Superfund program; and clean water laws protect our drinking and surface waters.

Today, we are faced with our greatest challenge yet: global warming. The facts are in - global warming is real, it's happening now, and we have only a short window of time in which to take real action.

We Can Do It! (But we need your help) We know we can meet the challenge posed by global warming. Right now we have the technology and know-how to create new, good paying, green collar jobs, make smart investments in new energy saving technologies, and shift to renewable fuels to generate affordable electricity. But it will take a groundswell of public support to move decision-makers at the local, state, and federal levels to take meaningful action. To build this groundswell, the Sierra Club is continuing our efforts to mobilize hundreds of activists to get the word out in the Pittsburgh area about how we can curb global warming while growing a new clean energy economy. We really can do it - we can set our city, our state, and our country on the path to a clean energy future while creating good green jobs and growing our economy - but we can only do it with your help.
