streets of the Twin Cities for a neighborhood walk. |
There is a growing "buzz" of local activity in the Twin
Cities and beyond, and it is being supported by a new program called
Sierra Communities. This effort, directed by a volunteer steering
committee at the North Star Chapter, emphasizes support for grassroots
organizing around issues identified by local activists in five
Twin Cities communiities.
Environmental activists are meeting in members' homes, coffee shops,
and community centers, starting up email listservs, building relationships
with local leaders, researching pressing community issues, creating
flyers and brochures, and tabling at local festivals.
In Northern Dakota County, Sierra Club members are building support
for Light Rail and better public transit in the region – to
benefit the environment and resident’s quality of life.
Environmentalists with the Big River group in the St. Cloud area
are coming together to protect vulnerable forests and wetlands,
and to improve transportation options.
The Shoreview Green Community Campaign produced a report evaluating
their city’s environmental record so far, and recommending
ways to improve their performance.
Sierra Neighborhoods in South Minneapolis had a series of house
parties this summer and are planning a door to door effort to spread
the word about the campaign and distribute lawn signs.
Wayzata Sierra Communities members are raising awareness about
water quality and development plans that would impact Lake Minnetonka.
Through actions like these, environmentalism in Minnesota is being
revitalized from the grassroots up -- right in our backyards, in
our community centers, and the homes of our neighbors.
