April 2004 Events

April 24 -- Concerned citizens "walk the walk" for Earth Day

door to doorMany Americans do not know that the Bush administration has been weakening and failing to enforce the laws that protect our families and neighborhoods from pollution and toxic chemicals.

On Saturday, April 24th, more than 25 concerned citizens convened at the Sierra Club to learn more about protecting our neighborhoods from environmental risk. We gathered for a skills training on how to communicate this environmental message, and then set out on a Community Walk in the Seward neighborhood to get the word out to our neighbors and gather postcards to the EPA urging a stronger stance on mercury reduction.

We knocked on more than 110 doors and celebrated that afternoon with a picnic in Matthews Park. Thanks to all who participated!

April 26 -- Baby Buggy Brigade a huge success

Thank you to everyone who came out to Wooddale Park in Edina on April 26th to send the Bush administration a message that mercury standards need to be strengthened for the health of our communities.

There many families with strollers and toddlers who walked alongside. Songs like this filled the 50th Street and France Avenue walk:

"Row, row, row your boat,
gently down the stream,
merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
keep us mercury free."

Thanks for all the creativity and great signs. More than 50 moms, dads, and kids sent the message in an effective way. Nice job, everyone!
