| Lisa Bokovoy speaks at a mercury event she
organized "from top to bottom." |
Volunteering at the Sierra Club is excellent. I visited the office
in Minneapolis and had a tour. I immediately noticed that the people
who work there are dedicated and friendly.
I have always been interested in preservation of the environment.
However, during my research I learned just how much damage is being
done and how it affects humans. Even more important, I experienced
first-hand that one person can make a difference in this big problem.
When I sat down with the Conservation Coordinator she was interested
in seeing what I would be interested in helping out with. She described
a new campaign that is under way to inform citizens and get them involved.
It's called Building Environmental Community. I asked what she thought
about me organizing an event in my home town to inform them about
mercury standards and the fish we eat. She thought it was a great
idea and was excited about it.
I am a University of Minnesota senior in Public Relations and Advertising.
I planned the event from top to bottom. I wrote news releases and
put together an agenda for the community meeting. I generated a newspaper
article on the front page of the local news in the major metropolitan
daily newspaper, the Pioneer Press. I also got articles published
in two local newspapers and a radio interview with our Sierra Club
spokesperson for this event.
The staff accommodated me and helped me every step of the way. We
ended up with 40 attendees and a great increase in support from the
local citizens. Some of them were interested in getting involved through
volunteering their time.
Everyone at the Sierra Club is driven toward the mission of educating
the public and getting them fired up to support solutions that will
better the environment. This experience was exhilarating and increased
my passion for the environment.
