In with the New

Folks in the market for a new hybrid are waiting until the new year to make the purchase. And who can blame them, what with the government offering much bigger tax credits on the fuel-efficient models in 2006. (Nothing mind you, next to the massive subsidies they're giving the fossil fuels industry, but oh well.) In case you missed the news, starting January 1, purchase of a Prius could take more than $3,000 off your tax bill. But beware the fine print: The amount of the credit depends on the car, and the offer is only good on the first 60,000 units of each model sold.

I know that hybrids are sexy and all, kinda like the biodiesel fad, but if you're the poor-of-the-earth, you can still do way more than the average yuppie to stop global warming. It takes about three times the amount of fossil fuels to produce a car than it will consume in it's lifetime. So what about carpooling? What about staying in town with a friend for a coupla days? What about making that shopping list accumulate for several weeks before you drive in to get those things? These were all standard practices when I was a poor kid growing up just this side of wva. What about putting on a sweater and turning down the thermostat, or shutting off the heat in the unused rooms? If we wait for all the high-techies to tell us how to save energy, we'll be running out of it some time next week. Use your noggin why don't ya? mtnprivy@yahoo.com

If someone (yuppie or otherwise) needs a car and is going to buy a new one, wouldn't you rather they bought an efficient, high-mileage model? And wouldn't you rather the auto industry made more Priuses and fewer Hummers? Finally, don't you think it's possible that the person who buys the hybrid might also keep the thermostat down and carpool as well?
