...All is Vanity

Getting back to Vanity Fair's Green Issue, the folks over at AlterNet take issue with the magazine's selection of eco-heroes and are offering people a chance to nominate their own candidates for recognition on Earth Day.

The call for entries on this is closed, but I'm curious: Who did folks nominate?

I know that AlterNet stressed the lack of grassroots organizers and the overabundance of "rich white men" in VF's list. And certainly, the balance was tilted ludicrously toward the VF milieu -- namely Hollywood.

To be fair, though, some of the folks they highlighted really do deserve the attention: e.g., Yvon Chouinard, Wangaari Mathai, Al Gore... Yes, even some of the rich white men.

For grassroots eco-heroes of more diverse character, the annual Goldman Prize is an easy place to find them. And of course, there are thousands and thousands of bona fide heroes whose work goes unrecognized. Hopefully, some of you know such folks and nominated them.

Myself, I chose to nominate two scientists: First, the glaciologist Lonnie Thompson, who has spent more time living at extreme altitude than anyone alive in order to collect and study ice cores from the world's vanishing tropical glaaciers. And second, the chemist Paul Crutzen, who won a Nobel for his work on understanding the demise of the ozone layer. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that Crutzen and the colleagues he shared the Nobel with saved life on Earth. Without them, no Montreal Protocol, no CFC phaseout.

Now, these two aren't exactly unsung. As I say, Crutzen won a Nobel, and Thompson is the subject of a recent book, (Thin Ice, by Mark Bowen), but in popular culture they are anonymous. And that seems a shame.

So there are my picks. How bout other folks? C'mon, let us know. Even if you didn't nominate anyone. Who would you nominate given another chance?
