Better Beef

We've written about the benefits of grassfed beef before, but readers may be interested in a new study by the Union of Concerned Scientists (see: Greener Pastures) that confirms and strengthens many of the claims made for pasture-raised beef. Not only does the practice lessen environmental damage to the land and reduce antibiotic use (or abuse as the case may be), but it is also more humane and better for you, since meat (and milk) from pasture-raised animals is higher in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. To find producers of pasture-raised beef and milk check American Grassfed Association.

For another view on grassfed beef, see this article from the Southern Sierran, the Angeles Chapter newsletter. Joan Zacharias speaks with WorldWatch's Danielle Nierenberg who maintains that while grassfed may be better, cattle ranching is still extremely resource-intensive.
Quote: "Whether we’re raising animals on this corn and soybeans or raising them on grass, we all just have to stop eating as much meat and realize that it’s expensive no matter what way you produce it in terms of land pressures or all the food safety problems with the animals in feedlots and all the water that it takes."
What do you think? Is buying and consuming grassfed beef a step in the right direction or just another form of overconsumption?
