What's Wrong With Being Sexy?
Argentinean beauty queen Evangelina Carrozo got plenty of attention when she stripped to a thong bikini at a summit of European and Latin American leaders to protest proposed pulp mills in neighboring Uruguay. Unfortunately, most of the attention seemed to be directed at the Greenpeace activist's curves, not her cause. Said Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, "I didn't see anything about pulp. I was just looking at her."PHOTOGRAPH BY REUTERS/LEONHARD FOEGER

reminds me of the ad campaign in mexico aimed at keeping poachers from taking turtle eggs. It featured a girl in a bikini with the ad line 'Real men don't need turtle eggs.' (eggs -- huevos in spanish -- being another term for, well, cajones). I believe it was rather controversial with mexico's feminist orgs.
There are definitely some similarities! I wrote about the turtle ads for Sierra back in January. They were indeed controversial, but I thought a sexy campaign was pretty appropriate since the turtle eggs are often poached for sexual reasons. Fight fire with fire and all that...
What's wrong with it? Nothing at all. Where do I sign the pulp mill petition?
The rest of the Chavez quote: "I didn't see anything about pulp. I was just looking at her. It was one of the best things that have happened at this summit." The activists want to know: so did he, or didn't he, get the message? The Americans want to know: Why can't our leaders be so enlightened?
que buena cola ;)
