With the Round of 16 well underway, we thought the soccer-minded among you might be interested in Groovy Green's look at how the participating countries stack up off the field in terms of environmental challenges and progress. Groovy.

Scanning the list subsequent to posting, I noticed at least one big oversight: No mention of the fact that Australia is the only industrialized country that joined the US in refusing to ratify Kyoto. That shouldn't stop anyone from cheering on the socceroos (although it's a tad late for that), but it should be noted. Why would the Aussie government oppose Kyoto? Because they're a major coal producer, that's why. But they also stand to be one of the countries hit first and hardest by warming -- something both Tim Flannery and Jared Diamond touch on in their respective books, The Weather Makers and Collapse.
It's probably bad form to comment on my own post, but here I go again with, sad to say, something to kill the buzz about Germany staging a "green" World Cup. The BBC reports that "the German cabinet is likely to agree a deal that will reduce carbon emissions from industry by only 0.6% between 2004 and 2012." A pathetic target and one that could further damage EU efforts to meet Kyoto commitments. The move is a victory for German business interests, says the BBC, and a boon to all the naysaying skeptics who are routing against Kyoto. Not good. Not good.
