Our car guy, Dan Becker, drives a Prius, and then only sparingly. Needless to say, it was a change of pace for him to tool around his hometown of Takoma Park, MD in a big, yellow Hummer. The New York Times reports on his reaction in a piece entitled, "
A Field Trip Guzzling Gas, Among the Environmentalists." That headline cracks me up. Kinda makes it sound like
environmentalists were some remote jungle tribe or mythical species. Then again, I nearly headed this blog entry, "Running with the Devil" -- as if Hummer-drivers were cloven-hooved Satan-spawn, which of course they're not. Right?

Mr. Becker has a household of four persons and one enviro friendly car. He must live close to public transportation. If the family did not and had to travel some distance to work, or transport cargo for their job,I doubt he could act so pompous.
To Anon.
We should all be able to act "pompous". Meaning everyone should have the choice take clean efficient public transportation to work, school or otherwise.
In the US cars are thought of as a requirement of everyday life. This is truly unfortunate. They should instead be considered a luxury.
As for the transport of cargo comment. That sounds like your job you are referring to and deserves no consideration in your argument of getting to work.
They may not be cloven-hooved, but I do find them somewhat incomprehensible--why would anyone want to drive an unwieldy monstrosity like that? (Besides the annoyance of having to visit the gas station every 30 miles or so.)
