Having mentioned scientist/author Tim Flannery in another post a few days ago, I thought it only right to note that he was recently named Australian of the Year and that, in accepting the award, he slammed the Australian government's egregious global warming policy. Good on ye mate!

I'm a writer and an environmentalist in Australia. I write a green blog, on which I recently commented on Tim's getting of the award if you interested:

On environmental issues we're really clasping at straws when it comes to national pride at the moment!
I'm just now reading Tim's book, The Future Eaters. It's the tremendous story of human and animal and plant habitation in Australia. Australia is repeating the story of Easter Island. Just one tiny data point among many: A bounty of Orange Roughy were discovered off Australia in the 1980s. Huge amounts of this delicious fish were taken and the fishery is now in decline. The big story: it was later determined that Orange Roughy live @ 150 years, don't reproduce until 20-32 years; we may well have eat all the breeding population!
