Hollywood Nights
Even before Gore's utility records came to light, funny man John Stewart was skewering the 'green Oscars' hype. (If you click on that box up above, you can watch the segment right there in the very same window. The marvels of the Internet ... ). Stewart is merely stating the obvious (albeit with comedic flair), and it's a good and necessary antidote to all the self-satisfied preening that the Hollywood elite are prone to. As for Gore's energy expenditures, raise your hand if you were surprised to learn that mansion living is energy-intensive. For his part,* Gore buys carbon offsets, which is certainly laudable but doesn't let him entirely off the hook. The far bigger offset, to my mind, is the tireless work he has done in calling attention to the issue and, indeed, making it part of the public consciousness. Is he a hypocrite? Um, yeah, I suppose he is. And so are you. And so am I. Because, here's the thing: American levels of consumption are not currently sustainable, let alone the lifestyles of the rich and famous. We need to come to grips with that. In the meantime, to paraphrase Matthew, let's not obsess on the speck in our brother's eye and ignore the two-by-four in our own.
*For my part, I hope Al Gore wins the Nobel next. And I bet he does win it, too.

Jim Henley makes a nice point on his blog, Unqualified Offerings:
Al Gore uses a lot of electricity. Al Gore buys carbon offsets. Libertarians who take anthropogenic global warming seriously - count me among them - generally favor markets in emissions over hard regulatory targets for individual homes and businesses. That way people and companies can decide to conserve or offset or buy unused capacity as they see fit, minimizing emissions while maximizing utility.
Curiously, the “free market” think tank that gives us our first link declares that Gore’s free choice to use his own money to offset his family’s carbon output makes him a “hypocrite,” since he thinks global warming is bad.
Point being: Libertarians should love offsets and have no problem at all with Gore's approach to mitigating his impacts.
Yeah, I saw that Dave Roberts linked to that from Grist. It is a good point, exposing the intellectual hypocrisy of the accusers....
That said, I'm not 100 percent sold on carbon offsets. Seems like a good start and I'm glad Gore and others are pushing them. But I'd hate to see it used as an excuse just to going on living lavishly.
Sooner or later, we come up against limits.
Yes, let's excuse Al because he is a Democrat... politics comes before environment at the Sierra Club
That's a funny reading of what I said, which, by the way, was just me speaking for me, not me speaking for the Sierra Club. And, for what it's worth, I'm not a Democrat. I'm not anything. So there.
Sorry, I wasn't talking about you (my mistake).... just what I have seen in general on the Sierra Club posts about Dems like Gore, Dingell, Obama (coal) and Pelosi (her new love of nuclear).. I agree w/ you it's better not to be affiliated with any party
the comparison between Gore's home and an "average home" is totally off base. he runs several projects with full time staff, not to mention full time security.
Trying to shoot the messenger is just a sign of how weak the arguments against global warming are.
Haven't seen anyone on here argue global warming is not a pressing, valid, concern in need of immediate attention.. just arguing Gore is not practicing what he preaches...you illustrate the point of excusing Gore and putting politics ahead of environment ... so what if he runs projects... why didn't he have solar panels installed years ago if he really was concerned? I have had them on my house for 6 years and they work great.
This is a way for each of us to offset and contribute clean energy back to the grid.
Subject: Save on your electric bill while supporting a better solution!
Please join me in supporting the mission to upgrade America to solar power.
I just found out about this great opportunity to save on your electric bill while supporting a better solution. Now you can pay less for clean electricity than you do for dirty electricity.
Electricity production is one of the largest causes of pollution on Earth. As we consume more electricity, more coal and nuclear plants are built to handle the increased need.
Solar power is safe, clean energy and now it's easier and more affordable than ever before.
We can have clean, renewable energy from the sun—and we can even lock in our electricity rate so it can't go up for 25 years!
There is no system to purchase, no installation charges, no maintenance fees, no rate increases, no performance worries, and no permit hassles. It’s amazing!
And...there's no cost or obligation to reserve your solar power system. It's quick and easy.
I joined the solution! I hope you will too.
Best wishes
